Hello there!

Its been such a long time since I said Hello here. Today I need to write down things, since so many of them are swimming in my head.

Bangari, You are growing up to be a beautiful little girl, but at the same time a very stubborn toddler as well ๐Ÿ™‚ Love your smile, your infectious laughs and all the naughty things you do. The only thing that troubles me is when you dont sleep even though you are very sleepy. This lack of sleep then converts into crankiness which drives us crazy. Your poor dad has to manage sleepless nights and then long meetings during the day.

Here I am with another gift from above in my womb and praying that everything goes well and we have a healthy little baby sibling for you. We thought about this so much, had obstacles and finally here. It has been difficult at times, but your little hugs and kisses made it ok. Your smile made it ok, my dear kannamma.

This baby is for you more than for us and I dont say this because I dont love the baby enough. I do love him or her. But it is because we wanted to be sure you have a partner in crime through your childhood and a supporting shoulder in your adulthood. When me and your dad become old & cranky, we want you to have that extra hand to help you. Only a sibling can understand your parents weird unique ways. Only a sibling can…

So, praying to the God that he help us through this journey, take good care of each other and thanking him for all the blessings he had bestowed upon us.

The nausea and morning sickness make me go crazy at times, but our guardian angels, your maternal grandparents are here and saving the day for us. I thank God for this.

With a heart brimming of love,

your amma

Baby I – 6th month

This would be from August 6th to September 6th.

The best thing ever happened on your 6th month b’day – you finally accepted the bottle and drank close to 4oz from the bottle ๐Ÿ™‚ yay! I think I almost danced with joy. This meant I need not come home during lunch and come early in the evening instead. This was just awesome!

Next, we had your official annaprasannam on 12th August. Your dad, me and your ammamma and tata fed your first solids – it was rice kheer made by your ammamma. You ate quite a bit of it and looks like you like it ๐Ÿ™‚ of course, you made a very curious expression when you first tasted it, first thing ever apart from mom’s milk.

We had your annaprasannam function on August 19th. This is a function where we lay couple of things on a mat and let you crawl and choose from those things. We putย Gold (bangles), Money(US dollars), Kindle, Apple, Flower and a Book. You first chose Gold, then money and then Kindle, followed by flower and book. So this means your first interest is gold and then money. ย I think you will become a great businesswoman ๐Ÿ™‚

Your yashoda atta’s family came to Austin for this function and they stayed for a week and we all had lots of fun.

This was also a time when I was inundated with office work and was quite stressed out. I was trying really hard to spend quality time with you and also get things done at work. Your dad was very busy with his MBA work and was traveling quite a bit.

So, all in all, 6th month was a great month, you started taking solids. We started you with carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, apples, pears etc,. And your ammamma would make rice and dal soup as well which you used to love. You started mastering crawling, which was lot of fun.

Baby I – 5th month

This would mean from July 6th to August 6th.

  • To kick off, your paternal grandpa left for India on July 6th, your 5th month b’day after spending 2 months with you. All I can say is that he didnt want to get too attached to you, but I think he got attached to you nevertheless ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Your bamma left on July 19th and your ammamma and tata (maternal grandpa) came on the same day. This was very exciting for me since finally my parents are able to see my daughter ๐Ÿ™‚ They were very excited to see you and wanted to play with you right away.
  • You took around 10 days to get used to the new set of grandparents and they finally figured how to keep you entertained.
  • They took steps to make sure you have enough space to roll around and practice crawling.
  • You have become an expert at rolling over and have started crawling!! This was awesome! this also solved lot of gas issues and you weren’t gassy anymore ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Your tata started playing lot of music (the western type and the bollywood type, your bamma was more into the devotional) and you kind of nod along on your tata’s shoulders when the music is played.
  • I continue to come home during lunch breaks to feed you since you still refuse to take the bottle.
  • We have started planning for your annaprasannam in August – your official annaprasannam is going to be on August 12th (6th month,6th day) and then the function is going to be on August 19th.

So, those are the key happenings in 5th month.

15 month update

I know, we are going from posting a 4 month update to 15 month update..big leap, but I want to do this before I forget all the precious things you do.

  • You love repeating 2 syllable words after us. Your fav words are amma, nanna, tata, atta, anna, mama, papa, baba
  • You try hard to say ammamma and bamma, but you are getting there.
  • You love to explore new places and fearless that makes your dad and me very nervous. We worry that you will fall and get hurt.
  • You dont walk, you just sprint. You run everywhere.
  • You love have people around you. When me or your dad are alone with you at home, you just cling to us. When both of us are at home, you play by your own ๐Ÿ™‚ This makes cooking extra difficult when only one of us is at home.
  • You love dress-up, you love hair-bands and want to wrap any cloth you see around your head and then you insist that we show you how you look in the mirror..pretty adorable and sometimes tiring ๐Ÿ™‚
  • You dont want to read any single book to the end…you just jump from one book to another which kind of makes it hard for the reader, but still this is pretty cool.
  • You give a hug when we say “I love you”
  • You always want to kiss amma, when nanna is asking you for a kiss ๐Ÿ™‚ this I find heart-melting..you have me on your finger-tips at this point ๐Ÿ™‚
  • You are very social and sometimes older kids dont know what to do when you insist on kissing them, which means giving them a good lick ๐Ÿ˜€
  • We are going through a 2nd ear infection in 2 months and though you seem to be in good spirits, this is making me and your dad nervous. are you prone to ear infections? ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
  • You have the best laugh and can play with anything and everything..you are my bestest baby and the most adorable babyย toddler ever!

Love you with all my heart,

Baby I – 4th Month

Dear Bangari,

This is June 2012. You are growing up and changing every day ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Your took your first flight. It is to Aparna atta’s house in Chicago. You did pretty well on the flight. The flight from Austin to Chicago was packed and you were fussy, but I don’t blame that on you. We all felt that we were in a tight can packed with lot of sweaty, smelly people. But you were an angel on the flight from Chicago to Austin. This flight had lot of room, the air was cooler and I couldn’t ask for more.
  • Also, you laughed loud for the first time when your paternal grandpa carried you around and played with Arnav and Varun and Aparna atta’s place.

Big Milestone: Rolling over. You have started rolling over, but not as often as we would like to see.

Most memorable moment: You rolled over! You rolled over for the first time on my birthday, just a day shy from your 3rd month birthday ๐Ÿ™‚

Baby I – 3rd month

Dear Bangari,

This is May 2012. Everyone says that the first 3 months are the toughest since the baby is not doing much other than feeding, sleeping and yes peeing and pooping ๐Ÿ™‚
But they have also been very memorable because I got to spend lot of time with you since I took 9 weeks of maternity leave. It let me bond with you and also heal my body from the C-section.

You have slowly started developing likes and dislikes. You love being held. You don’t like being in the swing. You love songs. You like bath time. You don’t like being wiped with a towel though ๐Ÿ™‚

  • For your 3rd month birthday, we had a cake from Baskin Robbins and took lot of pictures.
  • Your paternal grandpa came to visit you. Though he tried to stay unattached to you, he got very much attached to you ๐Ÿ™‚
  • I went back to work. It was very tough initially, but slowly I started getting adjusted to the new schedule.
  • Your battle with the bottle continues. I decided to come home during lunch to feed you and go back to work. This was both good and bad. Good because I get to see you in the afternoon and spend time with you. Bad because with the constant shuttling between work and home, I was not getting much office work done. So this meant late nights.
  • Your gas issues are slowly getting better. Some evenings are ok, and some evenings are more challenging.
  • You smile when we make funny sounds or when we sing songs. It is such a delight to see your smile.
  • We would take you on walks in a stroller during evenings. This was an evening ritual we diligently followed. After your grandpa came, your grandpa and grandma take you on evening walks.

Big Milestone: You roll from side to side, but not rolling over as yet. You follow sounds and big bright objects. You have started holding up your neck, but still not there yet completely.

Most memorable moment: You smile a lot. You smile in your sleep and it is one of the sweetest things ever. I love your smile and I hope that you will always be smiling when you grow up into an adult as well.

Baby I – 2nd month

Dearest Bangari,

Your 2nd month would be April 2012. I am going to list the events and happenings below.

  • We had your naming ceremony on April 3rd. It was a small affair as it was a weekday morning ritual. The priest came from the temple and performed the puja and your father wrote your name on a plate of rice – “M S I” – those were the initials ๐Ÿ™‚ You were incredibly fussy during the ceremony and I was begging the priest to finish the ceremony barely 5 minutes after he started it. It was such a big relief once it was done.
  • We celebrated your 1st month birthday on April 6th.ย  We had Austin’s pizza and cake from Baskin Robbins. We planned on going out, but then you were so upset with tummy ache that we canceled the plans.
  • Yashoda vadina came from Connecticut and was there for both the naming ceremony and your birthday. It was nice to have someone from my side of the family apart from Karthik mama. She spent long conversations with me which helped me vent out all the new mom frustrations.
  • Vadina got you a play gym. She held you as much as she could and by the ebd of her trip, she didn’t feel like leaving you and going back. She had fallen in love with you ๐Ÿ™‚
  • You started having troubles with gas. You would cry inconsolably for around 30 min to 1 hour in the evenings. Everybody in the house would rock you, hold you and try to soothe you.
  • I was planning to go back to work in May. So we started giving you bottle once a day when you were 6 weeks. But you just refused to drink from it. This was the beginning of the long battle between you and all the adults trying to get you drink some milk from the bottle. Apart from that everything was going great.
  • We got a swing for you. You would like it sometimes, but just cry bloody murder the other times.

The big milestone: You have started giving those half open smiles which were utterly charming.

Most memorable thing: One afternoon you fell asleep after nursing on the feeding pillow. You were so incredibly cute in your sleep and I just held you on the pillow for more than 40 minutes just staring at you. Your bamma advised me to put you in the crib. I told her I would, but didn’t really do it for the next 30 minutes ๐Ÿ™‚

Baby I – 1st month

Dear Bangari,

The first month was a beautiful yet challenging time. I was recovering from the C-section. I was trying to avoid taking painkillers, but the pain would just get unbearable by evening. So after going back and forth for a few days, I decided to take pain killers for at least a month before I can cut back on them. It was extremely difficult taking care of you if I was in so much pain.

I think the equally challenging task during this time was breast-feeding. The milk started coming after 4 days and then I didn’t know if I was feeding you right, at the right time and for the right amount of time. The doctor said that we need to feed you every 3 hours irrespective of whether you are hungry or not and you are sleeping or not. So this was fine during day time and every body would take turns to wake you up since it was just so thrilling to do that. You were this tiny munchkin and we would first draw the curtains out to let in some light, would take off the blankets, and then start playing some music. You would generally get up during one of these. And then I would feed you for almost an hour. Now I think about it, I think this is because both your body and my body were working hard to establish this beautiful relationship. But waking you up every 3 hours during night was just very challenging. Because we would be very groggy and setting the alarm clock to 2 Am, 4 Am was not that fun. But we religiously followed the schedule. And anytime I was late by an hour or two, I would feel infinitely guilty ๐Ÿ™‚

The doctor declared at your 1 month check-up that now since you are back at your birth weight of 6lb, we can let you sleep through the night, but definitely feed you once every 3 hours during the day time. I almost jumped with joy when she said this ๐Ÿ™‚

So, now some fun facts during your 1st month.

  • Your bamma (paternal grand-ma) would sing lot of songs for you.
  • I didn’t change your diaper the first week. You dad and bamma took care of that.
  • We gave you sponge baths the 1st 11 days. Then on the 11th day, we gave you the nalugu bath. And by the way the same principle applied to me as well. I hated not being able to take bath, but your dad helped me with the sponge baths. It was great when I could finally take a head bath on the 11th day.
  • We would give you a proper bath in the evenings this 1st month after the 11th day.
  • We didn’t take you out except to the temple since the doctors said that till you get your 1st vaccination shot in the 2nd month, we are not supposed to take you anywhere outside since you are highly susceptible to diseases.
  • My daily routine was something like this: Wake-up, feed you if you are awake and crying, brush, eat breakfast, feed you, try to take a bath if possible, feed you, take a bath if I hadnt done that already, have lunch, feed you, take a nap while feeding you, arrange everything for your bath, you bamma and I would then given you bath, dress you up, feed you, have dinner, feed you, go to bed.
  • hmm, so yes everything revolved around your feedings. I would check email sometimes and then talk with mom and dad on phone (I think around after 10 days after you were born, since I was still very weak till that time) and then figure out what to buy on amazon for you.
